A breastfeeding mom will often realise that the nipple changes shape during breastfeeding. As nature take its place, the mother’s nipple deformed accordingly to adapt to the baby's mouth and muscular coordination, enabling optimal food intake and provide the best possible training for the jaw, palate, tongue, lips and healthy oral development.

Why the NUK teats/nipples shape is not round?
The NUK orthodontic teat/nipple shape is developed based on studies undertaken by Dr.med.dent. A.Müller and Prof.Dr.Dr. W.Balters.
It was reasoned that when a baby suckles from the mother’s breast, the baby exerted effort and hence learned to coordinate the movements between the jaw, tongue and lips to strengthen the oral muscles and prepare the mouth for the coming tasks such as teething, chewing, swallowing and speaking.
They discovered that when a baby feeds from the mother’s breast, the mother’s nipple changes shape to support the optimal coordination of the mouth of baby. This special asymmetrical shape is used as the model for all NUK teats to this very day.
Following as close to nature’s example, the orthodontic NUK teats/nipples shape simulates the asymmetrical shape of the deformed nipple during breastfeeding, which demands hard work on the baby’s part. On the other hand, if feed is ingested without requiring any effort, the baby may develop malformations of jaw and teeth as a consequence.
NUK has researched the shape right down to the smallest detail over many decades, developed it further and constantly adapted it in light of latest medical findings. No other teat comes as close to mimicking the breastfeeding process and supports the healthy development of the mouth and jaw muscular system so naturally as the original from NUK.
Every surface of the NUK First Choice Premium Nipples/Teats plays its part
a. The angled, flattened baglet - gives way to pressure, enabling tongue and lower jaw to carry out their sucking motions unhindered
b. Lower narrowing - offers room as well as a restraint for the tip of the tongue and front edge of the lower jaw during the sucking action
c. Rear underside - allows the lower jaw sufficient room for the feeding motions
d. Round, flattened lip support - follows the example of the mother’s breast
e. Arched upper surface - adapts to the shape and development of the palate
f. Slightly offset hole – teat hole intentionally placed towards the back rather than at the point, to promotes optimum salivation of the feed just like when feeding at the breast – milk nourishment stays longer on the mouth, mix with saliva, for easier digestion
g. Upper narrowing - allows the upper jaw to retain the teat in the infant’s mouth during the sucking motions of the lower jaw
h. NUK Anti-Colic AIR SYSTEM - equalizes the vacuum pressure, allows continuous air flow, and helps minimise infant colic. Ventilation hole regulates intake or air and prevent the nipple from collapsing/retracting
Similar to when breastfeeding the flattened baglet of the teat supports the width of the lower jaw, as the tongue is pushed to both sides. The highly arched upper side likewise moulds itself almost perfectly as the palate develops. The lip support is virtually flush, so that – as with suckling movement at the breast – it is possible to close the lips firmly. This helps to train the coordination and movement of the lower jaw while sucking, at the same time minimising swallowing of air, which can so often cause the little ones discomfort from tummy ache.
The teat hole has been intentionally placed towards the back of the teat rather than at the point. This means that the nourishment remains in the mouth of the infant longer, enabling it to be softened more easily with saliva – an important consideration for healthy digestion.
